A château in the Beaujolais region surrounded by 7 hectares of vineyards

What could be better for a weekend in the Beaujolais region than combining exploration with culinary delights? A guided tour of a historic estate and its vineyards, a private wine tasting paired with local cheeses or savory bites, and a night in a charming apartment inside an authentic 13th-century castle?

The Château de Champ-Renard invites you to enjoy this exceptional experience. It is located 30 minutes by car from Lyon, 1 hour and 50 minutes from Geneva, and 2 hours and 15 minutes from Paris by TGV.

Built during the Middle Ages by the lords of Beaujeu, the estate initially served a defensive purpose, as it guarded the southern and eastern approaches to the region against enemies who might have sought to invade it…

The building underwent numerous changes over the centuries, eventually becoming a vineyard in 1765 under the leadership of the Marquis d’Espinay-de-Laye, who inherited the estate at that time. The vineyard was planted around the estate’s perimeter and gained enough renown that the future President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, was welcomed there during his visit to the region. A great connoisseur and lover of wine, Jefferson—who was then serving as his country’s ambassador—was studying various vineyards at the time in the hope of exporting French expertise while adapting it to the specific conditions of America.

After passing through the hands of numerous owners in the 19th and 20th centuries and undergoing a period of inactivity, the château was taken over by Fabienne Vilain and Denis Garnier in 2014. They decided to restructure the vineyard and plant new vines with a focus on biodiversity in order to produce eco-friendly, vegan wines with no added sulfites, restoring a rich and complex flavor. Their Beaujolais wines (Chardonnay, Gamay, and Gamaret) are available for purchase online as well as at the château.
