A Beaujolais winery in the heart of a historic estate

Built in the 13th century during the height of the Middle Ages, the Château de Champ-Renard began as a fortified house serving a strategic defensive purpose before being transformed into a wine estate in the 18th century at the initiative of the Marquis d’Espinay-de-Laye. Over the centuries, the château has been home to successive lords of Beaujeu, as well as historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson, who had not yet become president of the United States.

After passing through the hands of several owners, the château and its estate were taken over in 2014 by Fabienne Vilain and Denis Garnier, who decided to cultivate the 7.5 hectares of vineyards with the goal of transforming them into an eco-friendly vineyard. These passionate entrepreneurs then developed a high-end wine tourism program to introduce as many people as possible to the château’s wines (Gamay, Chardonnay, Gamaret) and its history.

While each private tour varies depending on the itinerary chosen, they all offer the chance to explore an authentic Beaujolais wine cellar and a winery with a history spanning eight centuries.

A tour of our Beaujolais vineyard, the fermentation room, and the château’s grounds will allow you to discover the secrets of Beaujolais wines in an exotic setting—carefully restored—where the French art of living truly comes to life.

Our various private tour and tasting itineraries

Château de Champ-Renard offers a variety of tours of its Beaujolais wine cellar, each ending with a wine tasting. These are private group tours that must be booked in advance on our website or by phone.

Among the various experiences we offer are “Life at the Château” and its Wine and Cheese Workshop (a tasting of four wines paired with regional cheeses) or the Wine and Chocolate Workshop (four wines paired with chocolates from local artisan Henry Desmoulins) or the gourmet stroll through the château’s romantic gardens, which allows you, after a comprehensive 1.5-hour tour of the estate and a tasting of three wines, to enjoy a delicious picnic in our 19th-century English-style park before setting out on a hike in the surrounding area to discover the region’s natural charms.

Please note that you can also contact us to arrange a customized tour designed to fully meet your needs. And, to learn all the secrets of winemaking, you can also sign up for an introductory wine-tasting workshop. Find details about each tour here.

Each tour of the Beaujolais vineyards is conducted in small groups of up to 10 people, in French or English.

Finally, to make the most of your stay in the Beaujolais region, please note that you can book a stay at one of our two charming vacation rentals. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience life in a château for a weekend!
